“You really have to care. You really have to give a shit.”

Maddie McGarvey is passionate about covering her own backyard. This Columbus-based photojournalist was named one of TIME magazine’s 51 Instagram Photographers to follow in the U.S. She focuses on showing the richness and complexity of her adopted home to the wider world. Her photos in The New York Times, Washington Post, National Geographic and TIME showcase complicated social and current events in the Midwest. Many of her photos show people at the lowest points in their lives, as her recent, powerful photos covering the aftermath of the Dayton shooting brought to light. But she also wants to leave her viewers with a sense of empathy and hope. “I’m lucky that I get to witness everything,” says Maddie, “even if it’s really, really difficult. I see a lot of dark stuff, but I also get to see a lot of the light.”

Join us Thursday, October 17 as Maddie shares her compelling story and insights on covering national politics and current events through a Midwestern lens, working as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, and stitching together a rich and fulfilling freelance career.
