Allen Laseter

______

Surreal perspectives, distorted human form, and colonists on the moon—welcome to the weird and wonderful mind of illustrator/animator Allen Laseter.

Allen believes in a world where if you can dream it, you can do it. His story begins as a graphic design student in Auburn, Alabama, turned film student in Nashville, Tennessee. Post graduation, Allen worked in live-action filmmaking, basically taking whatever freelance he could get.

In need of work, and knowing just the bare essentials of Adobe After Effects, Allen landed an animation gig that would change the vector of his career. Joyfully in over his head, Allen recollects creating his first 30-second piece as both a “nightmare” and “super gratifying.”

After this success, he sought out more animation work, gradually transitioning himself out of live-action filmmaking one gig at a time. Allen was drawn to the infinite possibility that came with animation. Animation was his first experience making what he saw in his head come to life.

As a master of framing and composition, from his days as a filmmaker, and uncanny knack to turn the ordinary to extraordinary (with a patina of weirdness), Allen soon made a name for himself. Coming into animation as an outsider gave him a new vision and unorthodox methodologies. His work reflects his joyous relationship within the medium through the use of rich textures, vibrant colors, and fluid action.

Most notably, Allen has created animation shorts for brands such as Netflix, Facebook, Coca Cola, and Lagunitas Brewing Company, as well as one of his personal favorites, a TED-Ed animation, “Will Winning The Lottery Make You Happier?”

Join us on Thursday, August 16, as we peek behind the curtain to Allen’s process, philosophy, and how he storyboarded his future.
