School for the GIFted

*UPDATE* This event has been postponed to a later date: June 16. We regret any inconvenience to the individuals registered. In Columbus, OH as around the country, we recognize that now is not the time for business as usual. There is nothing usual about the despicable actions of the four police officers in Minnesota, nor the brutal civil rights violations in our own community. There is nothing usual about law enforcement agencies nationwide violating the promise that they made to us: to protect and serve. There is everything usual about the systemic oppression of our Black brothers and sisters, and it fills us with sadness and anger and it must come to an end. We are pausing our immediate business-as-usual activities to educate ourselves about how we can provide the support that can heal our community. We are committed to using our platform to amplify Black voices so they are heard. We welcome your input on what actions we can take, stories you would like to share, and conversations we should have together. We will be sharing opportunities to get involved in our social media, and we invite the community to do the same with us. No justice, no peace. Know justice, know peace.

Are you a traditional graphic designer who wants to get into digital? Have Photoshop and just want to make your own GIFs? Just want to wow some folks at your workplace? This is the class for you!

In this session, we will cover the basics of making GIFs in Adobe Photoshop and how you can use them across different platforms.

Walkthroughs include: how to make Photoshop animations using both stop-motion and frame-by-frame techniques; exporting videos and GIFs that are high-quality and lightweight; how to use your new GIF skills across the internet, including making Instagram stickers and Slack reactions; how to get started in Adobe After Effects; and how to cheat artfully by making GIFs in Keynote!

We recommend that participants have a basic knowledge of Photoshop. We will work through the process together so please have Photoshop installed prior to logging in. Bonus content, we will additionally be showing you how to use Adobe After Effects and Apple Keynote, so please have those open and ready if you would like to follow along.

CSCA Presents: Oscar Fernández

Sharing Legacies
Now More Than Ever

***This event is free to attend! Log in a little early—we’ll aim to start by 7:05 PM.***

Oscar Fernández, Professor Emeritus of Graphic Design from the University of Cincinnati, talks about his celebrated career and legacy as a teacher and practitioner.

Oscar graduated from Yale University in 1976 with an MFA in Graphic Design. There he studied with luminaries like Paul Rand, who taught him that good design makes an incredible impact. Design brings truth and clarity with urgency and expediency, which Oscar believes is more important now than ever before. But Oscar has long championed the timeless virtues of good design. Over the course of his more than forty-year career, Oscar has been paying forward the lessons of past masters, touching the lives of generations of designers who, like him, believe in the transformational impact of their work.

In addition to teaching at Carnegie Mellon University, Maine College of Art, University of Cincinnati, Ohio State University, and Montana State University, Oscar has held design directorships at international for-profit and non-profit institutions, including Fitch Worldwide and the Wexner Center for the Arts. Among his many design awards are the inclusion of work in GRAPHIS Posters 2002, Typography 20, STA 100, AIGA Graphic Design Annual 19. In 2006, his eyethink design team received a Merit Award from the Society of Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD) for the John Glenn Institute exhibit on the Ohio State University Campus.

Join the CSCA on Thursday, June 18 as we celebrate Oscar’s legacy and learn more about how the permanent and transformative impact of education and mentorship shapes our lives and careers long after we’ve left the classroom.

Inviting students, grads, pros, and anyone who wants feedback on their portfolio: get your digital portfolio ready for this virtual review session! Get a 20-minute virtual face-to-face with a reviewer, get constructive criticism, and then get moving to the next. We’ll use Zoom breakout rooms to enable this experience.

This fast-paced session will offer you a range of perspectives on your portfolio all within one evening. This is designed to be a casual setting to connect you with some of Columbus’ finest creative talent in a range of disciplines, covering branding, print, and digital. You’ll have the opportunity to practice your interview skills, get feedback on your work, and gain insight into the industry.

This event is now FREE to attend. All previously paid registrants will be contacted and refunded.
Participation is limited to the first 30 people to sign up.

How to participate

  • Register for your spot in the event.
  • Pick your top 3 examples of your best work and prepare to spend 10–15 minutes talking about them.

How the portfolio review will work:

  • Using Zoom breakout rooms, each participant will get four rounds of 20-minute one-on-ones with professionals.
  • We ask that the participants select their top 3 creative projects to share so that they have time to both present their work and ask questions of the reviewer.

How do I prepare for a virtual portfolio review?

  • We have a panel of local experts to discuss this very thing scheduled for May 28! Join us for this free session in which we’ll cover virtual interviewing, resumes, portfolios, social media, and personal-brand management.

My digital portfolio isn’t ready.

  • It’s never too early to get constructive feedback. This session is all about improving your portfolio and getting practice sharing it to help you feel confident next time you interview for your dream job.
