Gareth Smith and Jenny Lee of Smith & Lee Titles & Design blew in directly from SXSW Interactive in Austin just in time to wow us with their movie title work, which features a captivating mix of photographic and painterly qualities. While their movie-within-a-movie creations for films like “Juno,” “Young Adult,” “Thank You for Smoking” and “Up in the Air” may have the gloss and dizzying shifts of CGI, it was both refreshing and daunting to see that it’s often the product of painstaking hand illustration, cut-outs, and image degradation from multiple passes through vintage Xerox machines. Given their attention to detail and how stuff really works, it wasn’t surprising to hear that Gareth was raised by a couple of inquisitive but rigorous CSIs. And the magic they produce to set the mood for such diverse movies is unsurprising for a couple who met while working on the Broadway production of “Wicked.”
