Rediscovering Identity Through Design

Identity –> Passion –> Purpose

Social change wasn’t always on Deroy Peraza’s radar. As a young refugee from Cuba, it rarely crossed his mind. But as he started his career, he began to realize that social change was a critical part of his dormant Cuban identity. It became his passion and the motivation behind everything he does. It’s the driving force behind Hyperakt, a New York City design studio focused on making a positive impact. Hyperakt’s clients include the ACLU, the United Nations, UNICEF, the NAACP and other organizations that tackle the toughest challenges of our time.

Is it possible to feed social change and your creative fire while also keeping the books balanced? These ideas aren’t mutually exclusive at the boundary-pushing Hyperakt Labs, an idea incubator where designers transform their social and creative passions into viable products and services.

“Clients tend to hire you to replicate things you’ve already done,” says Peraza. “So if you want them to hire you to make something awesome, you have to show them what that looks like.”

What moves you beyond design? What do you care about more than anything in the world, and how is it authentically rooted in your identity? Join us on Thursday, March 21, as Deroy Peraza discusses a mission that’s easy for some but hard for most—finding your purpose.
